The past year (2008) was a very busy one for the ATIU, as the Unit was engaged in an extensive island wide public education drive, under the rubric “Participation is Power”!
A series of sensitization sessions were held in the rural areas and the School’s Access to Information Programme (S.A.T.I.P ) took full flight, as the administrators and students of the 29 Vocational Training Centres (VTC) of the HEART Foundation were taken on a information Tour of the Access to Information regime in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
The message of open government was carried to the nook and crannies of Jamaica, as the Unit participated in a series of community meetings, large expositions, mass media advertising and non traditional advertising via taxi cabs. The response from participants has been overwhelming yet gratifying and it was good to see Jamaicans open up and welcome information on their right to know and the right to access.
